The day we learned what trust actually costs
Some years ago, before we realized we were inspectors at heart, we hired one to look at a fixer-upper we wanted to buy. Halfway through the walkthrough, we heard his wording sharply soften — the realtor was standing behind us, signaling him to downplay what he'd found. Right there, all trust was lost.
We bought the house anyway, polished the gem ourselves, and made it a home. But that memory still guides us today.
As a prior military family, we know the challenges of moving to a new area — and the excitement of finding a new home. After 25 years moving around the world on military assignments, we understand the process and the many steps of finding the right one. In 2006 we bought a newly-built home in Medical Lake and fell in love with renovating the rough basement into a living space — that project taught us how to see through walls to understand the systems hidden inside.
In the last five years, we've renovated three homes as a family. After leaving the Air Force, we spent several years doing home repairs and found that exploring, learning, and teaching about houses gave us the most fulfillment. We love working with first-time buyers and walking them through every detail of their new home.

Meet Jim & Tina
Jim
Jim spent years in construction trades before an Air Force career took him around the world. He recently completed a construction management degree — and found he likes houses a lot more than skyscrapers and warehouses. These days he's the one on the roof or squeezed into the crawlspace, still chasing the same question: how does this house actually work? He travels every chance he gets.
Tina
Tina traded a classroom for job sites years ago and hasn't looked back, just as comfortable in a furnace closet as she was in front of a class. She's got sharp eyes and a green thumb, and outside of inspections she's growing Moms Garden Patch to feed the community fresh produce.

"I saw all the 5 star reviews, and thought 'this is someone who deletes their low ratings' initially I started hunting for a different inspector. But we had entered contract on a house at 8pm on a Wednesday and were notified at 7 am Thursday that we needed to have inspection done sometime in the next week or so. Only issue is we were going to be out of town that entire week. After multiple calls, no one else was available such short notice so I reluctantly tried Stepstone.
I'm thrilled to say, I have never been more wrong! Stepstone came out within 24 hours of our first call. Jim and his wife were incredibly thorough and took their time with our home they scheduled out 4 hours to inspect and used pretty much all of it. They were knowledgeable throughout our walkthrough with them and easily answered questions we had or were able to direct us to someone who could answer. We had the full many page long report literally the same evening as the inspection.
For all of these reasons, Stepstone absolutely deserves 5 stars! But I wanted to write something for all my fellow 'they must delete those' skeptics. Please note: this absolutely is still a five star review. But if you're anything like me I know you filtered to the worst one, so here you go!"
